Active and inactive contacts
This article explains the difference between active and inactive contacts in FirstQuadrant. It outlines how contact state affects AI engagement, when and how to change a contact’s status, and how to manage contact activity during bulk imports. Use this feature to keep your action list focused and avoid unnecessary credit usage.
Overview
In FirstQuadrant, every contact is either active or inactive. This distinction determines whether or not FirstQuadrant applies its AI reasoning to that contact. Managing contact states properly helps ensure your action list remains focused and your credit usage stays optimized.
Info: Using inactive status effectively helps you keep FirstQuadrant focused only on what matters, avoid action list clutter, and optimize your AI credit usage.
What is an active contact?
An active contact is one that FirstQuadrant actively monitors and engages with.
- Whenever a new email is received from an active contact, or a calendar event is created, FirstQuadrant will:
- Analyze the input
- Plan out the next steps
- Generate a task in your Actions list
- This allows the AI to continuously manage and progress the sales conversation.
Most contacts, especially during active sales cycles, should be marked as active.
What is an inactive contact?
An inactive contact is still fully synced with FirstQuadrant:
- Emails, notes, calendar events still appear in the platform.
- But: FirstQuadrant will not generate AI-driven action items or analyze conversations.
This ensures:
- Your Actions list doesn’t get cluttered with irrelevant tasks.
- You don’t spend credits unnecessarily on post-sale or dormant conversations.
When to mark a contact as inactive
Examples of when to mark a contact as inactive:
- You’ve closed a deal, and the conversation is now about setup, onboarding, or support.
- A lead has gone cold and you no longer want FirstQuadrant to actively plan next steps.
- You’re managing internal or non-sales contacts where AI sequencing is not needed.
You can always reactivate them later if the sales conversation resumes.
How to change contact status
- Open the contact’s profile.
- Click the ••• menu on the top-right of the contact panel.
- Select Set contact as inactive (or Reactivate contact if already inactive).
You’ll see the current status (“Active” or “Inactive”) just below the contact’s name and avatar.
Bulk imports and contact state
When importing contacts—via:
- CSV upload
- App integrations
- Webhooks or API
You can choose whether imported contacts should start as active or inactive. This gives you control upfront over which contacts should trigger AI reasoning.
